During summer, advertisements selling the advantages of dry oils are everywhere
Until recently, most of the brands were using Mineral Oil as dry oil. There are several names for this oil: Cera Microcristallina, Ceresin, Microcrystalline Wax, Paraffin, Polybutene, Polyethylene, Polyisobutene, Synthetic wax. It is potentially toxic to the body and is oil only by its name. This is a petroleum derivative which is used there as an emollient
More recently, brands are also using ingredients of natural origin (mainly Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride or Coco-Caprylate / Caprate) as dry oil. The first is a non-greasy emollient. The second is chosen to help penetration of the ingredients into the skin and has a low risk of skin irritation
These two types of oil do not nourish the skin, unlike cold-pressed vegetable oils. They have the advantage of costing much much less than vegetable oils and thus reduce the cost of formulas
Cold pressed vegetable oil cannot be dry. Cold pressing is the only technique that keeps all the fatty acids from the plant or in the fruit kernel. These fatty acids nourish your skin (omega 9) and provide it with elasticity (omegas 3 and 6)
If the oil is hot pressed, it loses all its interest because there is no more fatty acid
Oily, cold-pressed and fresh vegetable oils have the advantage of telling you if the skin needs it or not. On very dry skin, Sweet Almond oil will be absorbed very quickly for example. Conversely, if the skin does not need it, the oil will take much longer to be absorbed. Therefore we advise you to choose the oil according to your skin type and always start with one or two sprays and then add more if necessary
Dry oil is thus a paradox, a pure marketing invention
